The History of West Covina
In 1923, 500 Covina residents were angry because their city wanted to build a sewage farm near their homes and on their land. These angry residents successfully avoided this sewage farm by incorporating their own city, which they named West Covina. Before World War II, West Covina was mostly used for growing walnuts and oranges. However, the booming economy that followed WWII caused massive growth in West Covina. In fact, West Covina’s population increased tenfold between the years 1950 and 1960. Today, more than 100,000 people live in West Covina, and the farming of walnuts and oranges is a rarity.
