The History of Victorville
Victorville is located in San Bernardino County in the High Desert of Southern California in the southeast portion of the Mojave Desert. The first inhabitants of Victorville date back to 1858 when Aaron Lane build a way station known as “Lane’s Crossing.” It was built to serve people traveling between San Bernardino and anywhere across the Mojave Desert. In 1885, a telegraph station was built near the railroad siding of Victor in what is Old Town Victorville today. The small town that developed around that telegraph station became known as Victor as well. This created confusion among the post offices, however, as there was already a town named Victor, Colorado. Because of this, the name was changed to Victorville in 1901. In 1941, Victorville Army Airfield was constructed and would later be known as George Air Force Base. This military base existed until 1992 when it closed for good due to the findings of some very toxic chemicals on site. Victorville was incorporated in 1962, and acts as the Mojave Desert Branch of San Bernardino County’s government.
Victorville's Famous Landmarks
George Air Force Base was once a major Air Force Base located in Victorville until 1992. It has since fallen into disrepair and is effectively a ghost town that the U.S. military still uses for training exercises.
Victorville Rock Faces are some of the more interesting sights in the High Desert. These faces, carved into rock, can be found off of some old dirt roads in the northern part of Victorville. They can be difficult to find, but are definitely something that makes Victorville unique.
The Old Sheriff’s Office, located next to City Hall, was built in 1870 before being moved to its current location today. It has been preserved quite well and is a very interesting piece of history from Victorville’s past.
Old Highway 66 runs through Victorville and is the road that Old Town is constructed around. The route begins in Chicago and runs all the way to Santa Monica. This Highway is a major reason that Victorville is as populous as it is today.
