The History of San Dimas
San Dimas is located in the San Gabriel Valley in Los Angeles County. San Dimas is named after the San Dismas Canyon that is located in the San Gabriel Mountains. The land that is now known as San Dimas was originally developed in 1837 and became known as La Cienega Mud Springs. Once Los Angeles became more populated and the Santa Fe Railroad Company began the construction of the intercontinental railroad, La Cienega got itself on the map in 1887. This began the construction of streets and businesses and also what led to the city’s name change to “San Dimas.” Like most other Los Angeles area cities, San Dimas was once known for its agriculture and citrus groves. In fact, the company Sunkist started in San Dimas. San Dimas was incorporated in 1960 and is still known for its western vibe, especially in the downtown area.
