The History of San Bernardino
San Bernardino is located in the Inland Empire of Southern California. It is named after Saint Bernardino of Siena, who was the patron saint of the day at the time of its founding. In 1851, the area that is now San Bernardino was sold to Mormons seeking new opportunities outside of Utah in Southern California. The Mormons built Fort San Bernardino and laid out the current street grid system based on Salt Lake City’s grid layout. San Bernardino was incorporated in 1854 with 1200 residents, the majority of which were Mormon, and drinking and gambling were prohibited at the time. Moving into the 20th century, the area became prominent for its orange groves and saw a large in flux of migrants from Oklahoma and Arkansas due to the Depression and Dust Bowl. Much of San Bernardino’s historic buildings and landmarks have been replaced with newer buildings and stores.
