The History of La Verne
La Verne started as a tract of land that was purchased by Isaac W. Lord in the mid 1880s. In 1887 he named the town “Lordsburg” after himself and began selling lots to developers for businesses and homes. In 1891, Lord founded the Lordsburg College which is still in existence today, although it has since been renamed the University of La Verne. In 1906, Lordsburg was incorporated and renamed to “La Verne.” La Verne became known as the “Heart of the Orange Empire” after World War II and was a large producer of oranges and other citrus. There are only two orange groves remaining to this day, located at La Verne Mansion and Heritage Park. The orange and citrus theme is still prevalent today as many signs and in downtown La Verne contain references to orange groves.
