The History of Covina
The city of Covina is located 22 miles east of Downtown Los Angeles and was founded in 1882. Covina gets its name from the way the valleys of the San Gabriel Mountains seem to form a natural cove around what were once vineyards that were planted there. The words “cove” and “vine” were merged to create the name “Covina” as a result of this natural phenomenon. Covina was incorporated in 1901 and was slightly less than one square mile, which at the time was the smallest city in the country. In 1909, Covina became the third largest orange producer in the world and also grew other citrus, such as grapefruits and lemons. Today, Covina has the largest movie multiplex in Los Angles County, AMC 17 Covina. Covina is centered directly in the middle of the 210, 10, 605 and 57 freeways, though no freeways actually pass through the city’s limits.
