The History of Baldwin Park
Baldwin Park is located in the San Gabriel Valley east of Los Angeles. It started out as a community in 1860 known as Vineland. In 1906, “Lucky” Baldwin wanted to establish a town nearby and call it “Baldwinville.” Urban legend says that Mr. Baldwin was walking into a store to meet with residents of Vineland about his proposed city when he slipped an would have fallen had the store owner’s wife not caught him. Because he was grateful for this, he decided not to establish his new city and instead grew Vineland. The city’s name was changed to Baldwin Park that same year. Baldwin Park is most notable as the home to the original In-N-Out Burger, which opened in 1948. The original In-N-Out was also California’s first drive-thru. Baldwin Park was once home to the famous Vias Turkey Ranch in the 1950s. It was known for its large outdoor aviary that was unique to the area. It has since relocated to Apple Valley. Baldwin Park was incorporated in 1956.
