The History of Azusa
Azusa is a city in the San Gabriel Valley east of Los Angeles. The first recorded reference to Azusa was in 1769 by Father Juan Crespi. He referred to Azusa, though it was then known by its native American name “Asuksa-nga.” In 1844, the land grant that was known as Azusa was sold to Henry Dalton who changed the name to Azusa Rancho de Dalton. He planted a vineyard and built a winery, distillery a vinegar house a meat smokehouse and a flour mill. In 1854, gold was discovered, drawing a large number of miners to the city. In 1887, the town of Azusa was planned and the name changed to what it is known as today. When the Los Angeles and San Gabriel Valley Railroad was completed in 1887, Azusa became much more accessible and brought an influx of investors and people looking for new opportunities in the area. Azusa was incorporated in 1898.
Azusa's Famous Landmarks
The Bridge to Nowhere is an arch bridge built in 1936 in Azusa Canyon. It was originally supposed to be part of a road that connected Azusa with Wrightwood, but was stranded after major flooding resulted in the abandonment of the project.
Crystal Lake, which is the only naturally formed lake in the San Gabriel Mountains, is located in Azusa and is a popular destination for camping and has been since 1920.
