The History of Apple Valley
The Town of Apple Valley is part of San Bernardino County and is located in the High Desert of Southern California in the Victor Valley of the Mojave Desert. There are only 22 municipalities in the state of California that use the word “town” instead of “city” and Apple Valley is one of them. Since Apple Valley is governed by a town council, the mayor changes every December. The Mojave River flows through the town of Apple Valley and as a result, was initially populated by Shoshonean, Paiute, Serrano, Vanyume, and Chemehueve Native American tribes. The Old Spanish Trail, as established by Jedediah Smith, runs through Apple Valley. Apple Valley was named after John F. Appleton, however coincidentally, it also used to be home to approximately 320 acres of apple and pear orchards in the early 1900s. Apple Valley held the first ever intercollegiate rodeo competition in the United States in the late 1930s. Due to the climate in Apple Valley, commercial orchards no longer exist, although the legacy lives on through the name of the town.
